Periparturient Diseases of Cattle
The Unit provides innovative approaches for solving metabolic and infectious disease problems in the periparturient dairy cow.
Tuberculosis affects white tail deer. It has been found that deer can spread this disease to cattle posing another threat to cattle producers. NADC scientists are studying the white tail in order to develop improved diagnostics thereby protecting the US cattle industry. Bacterial Diseases of Liestock

The Unit provides scientific leadership in reducing the prevalence of human food-borne pathogens in livestock and to elucidate the basic mechanisms of selected enteric diseases of hogs. Pre-Harvest Food Safety and Enteric Disease
The Unit provides scientific leadership in reducing the prevalence of human food-borne pathogens in livestock and to elucidate the basic mechanisms of selected enteric diseases of hogs.
Healthy animals are essential to a healthy agricultural economy. Since 1961 the mission of the National Animal Disease Center, a branch of the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Agricultural Research Service, has been to secure the health of America’s livestock by conducting basic research on animal diseases and apply the results to animal disease prevention and control programs. Healthy animals are more productive animals. Virus and Prion Diseases of Livestock
The Unit identifies and characterizes viruses and prions (abnormal disease causing proteins) associated with economically important diseases of livestock and develops methods to control or eradicate these diseases.
The Unit investigates and provides innovative approaches to solving bacterial diseases of the respiratory tract of poultry, swine, and cattle. Respiratory Diseases of Livestock
